making your mark

Sometimes I get so wrapped up in what I’m doing or making that I forget what inspired me to be an artist in the first place. For me, it was drawing and painting, although most of my work is now of the 3D variety.  I don’t draw nearly as much as I’d like (or perhaps as much as I should), but my love affair with mark making is never ending and passionate. So it felt really good to take a break yesterday and go see the Cy Twombly show. Huge, lovely paintings in a huge, lovely space (well, it is the Gagosian Gallery…) The Richard Serra piece was a nice bonus as I didn’t realise it was still there - mark making of a different variety.

Afterward, we walked over to Kings Place, a space next to the new Guardian building to see what it was all about and were delighted to find an exhibition of fabulous mixed media drawings by Dale Atkinson. Lovely work:

I felt so well nourished that I wanted to run out and buy a new sketchbook straightaway.
